I feel like I'm on nobody's side when it comes to fights over gender headcanons, especially when it's characters whose gender was handled indelicately or ambiguously in-canon, because I always default to headcanoning them as nonbinary/genderfluid when there's any hint of a question.

Possible spoilers for Danganronpa, Persona 4, and Voltron )

Is any of that what the creators intended? Probably not!
Am I projecting my own nonbinary identity onto fictional characters! Absolutely!

But it does mean that I have characters I can identify closer with, and it means that no matter what gender people write them as in fics, I can get on board with it.
So I'm gonna keep doing it because it makes me happy.

At this point, liberals are acting like idiots, going on and on about how many people the Senate bill is likely to kill, who is going to lose health insurance and probably die, how much more dangerous it will be a woman giving, how having a disability shouldn't be death sentence etc.

But here is the thing that they are eliding.

Survival of the... fittest, the richest, the strongest, the male-ist.

The rest of us? Eh. Who cares?

The whole plan of attach of pointing out how many people will be hurt by the bill is wasted time and effort. The Republicans don't care. The rest of us have no power.

Linnea just walked in from her last day of middle school/junior high. High school next year.

How did my baby get so big?

David and I walked her 3/4 of the way to the bus stop this morning, but we stopped before we got to the point where any of the other kids could see us. Don't want to ruin her cool factor, you know.

Sweet Linnea.

And Monday, she's headed for 10 days in Scotland and Ireland. Without ME.

I'm think gonna start doing Fanart Friday - collecting cool fanart I find or am linked to throughout the week and sharing it with you guys! Obviously, I'll source everything as best I can - it's just a shame that I still get sent a lot of cool fanart that's on Tumblr, but I can't share it with others because I don't use that site any more.

I'm still tired from yesterday, but a head's up (via a genealogy news feed I follow) in case it's of any use to other people:

Find My Past (one of the big online genealogy sites for the UK) are allowing free access to their main UK collections till 26th June. (No strings attached for this one, not even fake-orders to get it; only registering if you haven't already.)

Some more details & instructions on the site's blog: https://blog.findmypast.com/free-british-irish-records-2445715211.html

She's never had any real music instruction, though she participated in chamber choir for a year in high school. I think she sounds pretty good.

Sorry about the blank black screen! Took the video with my phone and Perry suggested the blank black screen to make it smaller, so easier to upload and share.

I'm sort of trying to find something...fandom friends, or maybe just friends.

I will always love Stargate (SG-1 and SGA) and Trek (TNG, DS9, VOY) I have passing interests in other and currently love Dragon Age, MCU, Steven Universe, Brooklyn 99.

I'm 35, bi, gf, married with a kid. I don't write as much fanfic as I used to still have a lot of ideas peculating up there. I miss being part of fandom though I've always felt like I was on the fringes.

I ship f/f and het mostly, and I read that too but I will write anything. Any pairing. I'm either mental or gifted. Not sure which.

I love old films from the beginning to the 70s. Love MST3K. The new series was great. I love crap films, I hate reboots but I will watch them sometimes.

I live in Wales, I work in a pharmacy and write fiction and poetry too.

I have an intro post here for more about me.

It all started when a friend of mine happened to mention the language-learning site Duolingo (www.duolingo.com). I was immediately drawn to how addictive it was, how fun it was, and how free it was. Ironically, I first wanted to improve my Spanish, as that is the foreign language I had been using (trying to use) the most. But I also took French in high school, and soon I couldn't resist using Duolingo to find out how much French I remembered. I quickly discovered that I had lost a lot of it -- in fact, Duolingo's test took me right back to the beginning, "Basics 1" -- but I also discovered that it started to come back to me, and the more I progressed through Duolingo's lessons, the more lessons I was able to test out of. I am now two lessons away from completing all of Duolingo's French lessons, and I am at least as good at French as when I took it in high school, and possibly even better.

Besides Duolingo, I have been able to practice my French with lots of other free resources on the internet. In fact, it's amazing how many resources are out there if you go and look. Here are my favorites so far:

-- Watching episodes of a French anime series, "Les Aventures de Ladybug et Chat Noir" (The Adventures of Ladybug and Black Cat). I have [personal profile] primsong to thank for this; she recommended this show and it is both charming and addictive to watch. I watch in French with English subtitles, although I sometimes watch without the subtitles just to gauge how good I am at picking up the French without the translation. (Not too good yet, but improving.) The episodes can be found on youtube.

-- A site that has you watch French music videos and fill in pieces of the lyrics. Sometimes there are technological hiccups (asking for the word before the video played the word; not allowing you to type in apostrophes while requiring apostrophes for the correct answer), but it's so much fun, I have to list it here. Also, the site has introduced me to the French musical group "Carrousel," and I now love their music, especially the song "Le Manque De Place." Here's the site: http://www.bonjourdefrance.com/karaoke-fle/index.php/fr

-- Reading fanfic in French on AO3. So far, I have read several French Doctor Who fanfics and a few Marvelous Ladybug fanfics (i.e., Les Aventures de Ladybug et Chat Noir). I have also managed to comment on the fics in French, although you'll have to ask the authors how comprehensible I was. Anyway, it's another great way to strengthen my reading comprehension with material that I'm actually interested in reading.

I am having rl this week; it is rubbish. (Or at least, it was hot and now there is a Thing I have to go to tomorrow; everything will be at least better once the Thing is over and I have recovered, or more or less; it's a multi-part Thing, as so often in life. Stupid Thing.)

And then just now I happened to look and Network are having a 45% sale again!. And guess who still has nearly all her b'day money? Oh, yes, I do. Now I just have to decide what to spend it on, so at least that will be some sort of an antidote.

If you are in R2 or can play R2 discs, you too can snag yourself obscure old British telly! (Mostly ITV, it tends to be other companies that release the BBC stuff.) I have been poking through to see what's on offer from my wishlist (lots! \o/) and can tell you that you can also get Press Gang, Enemy at the Door, Public Eye and Sapphire and Steel at bargainous prices! (Also Manhunt, The Power Game, The Sandbaggers and Mr Palfrey and Undermind and Zodiac). So you should go out and buy them and then write me all the fic, obv.

Anyway, I thought I'd give the heads up and enable my like-minded souls on my flist. ([personal profile] liadtbunny, I am shocked that you did not already tell me this! I rely on you for these things! ;-D)

I have spent most of the morning trying to figure out how to adopt two kittens from a shelter in the DFW -yes, Texas, and yes, I am in Washington state- who won't "hold" cats.

They are SO CUTE. OMG, so cute. I want them. Desperately.

But I cannot figure out how. They won't adopt to someone who doesn't show up, and I don't think I know anyone in the DFW area who would be willing to adopt them for me, and ship them on Alaska Airlines' petconnect. Heck, I'm even looking for someone I'd PAY to go adopt them for me etc.

Two of my adorable children are on board with this lovely idea. The third child and her father are orcs, orces I tell you.

Also, shelter in Texas. WTF do you put pets on petfinder and on your shelter page is you'll only adopt out of the PetSmart in Allen Texas, first come first serve? Seems like a recipe for heartache and wasted trips.

Been thinking about fandoms where fic happens for me, and where it doesn't.

I very rarely tend to read or write fic for movies - they're a fully encapsulated story, most of the time, and there's rarely much wiggle room for me to slot in a story of my own. Plus, I like to see the source material a couple times before writing fics, so, especially if it's new, I don't feel like I have the confidence to write the characters accurately, and worry too much about messing up on canon details.
The exceptions here (because of course I have exceptions) are when I feel a movie has left some details ambiguous, or if I wasn't satisfied with the ending, or if I was satisfied but not ready to let go of the characters, yet. But the latter, at least, are rare - I get attached to characters over a course of time, and 2 hours rarely is enough for me to latch onto them.
Similar with single-volume books, often - there's usually enough time for me to get attached to characters, but because the story is fully encapsulated, I just... rarely have anything to add. Also, purely book fandoms tend to be... significantly smaller. So it's just me yelling into the wind about them half the time.

With book series', comics, and shows, especially when there's a long time between releases? That's where I go wild, that's my playground.
I get attached to characters over the course of time the series runs, and every time a new canon addition is made to the universe, and there's a stretch of time after it, I kind of expand on the new info in headcanons and speculative fic, and in meta. I think it fosters a greater ground for creativity in general, at least for me and folks that work like me.
Like, as much as I get sour over Steven Universe delays, and I did with Gravity Falls, and I did with waiting for new Harry Potter books... I wouldn't have fallen in love with them so hard if I didn't have the wait, y'know?

Is anyone else in the same kind of boat? Do any of you actually prefer fic in one-offs like movies?

Voltron Legendary Defender, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel the Series, Inuyasha, Black Butler, Blue Exorcist, Welcome to Nightvale

Fannish Interests: I read and write fan fic. I occasionally write meta about shows or about writing fan fic. My reading habits are pretty much all over the place, and I sometimes read fandoms where I haven't seen a lot of the canon material if I know the writer or if the writer was bookmarked by a writer I like. ElfQuest, Sandman, Some Marvel X-Titles, Books of Magic, Some Indie things I don't remember the name of.
Other Info: I write about personal life issues and mental health issues on my blog. I also write about my various efforts to support myself which have not been entirely successful. I write original fiction though not very much due to the aforementioned mental health issues. (I am slowly overcoming the problem though, and am looking forward to eventually posting more original fiction to my fic journal.) Stark Talk interview with Donna Franceschild, approximately 30 minutes, on BBC iPlayer (works in the US; dunno about elsewhere)

She talks some about the original series in the first five or six minutes or so; between about 16:30-23:00+ she talks about her own experiences with being bipolar and how it relates to her creative experiences (only a very brief mention to how it had anything to do with the character of Campbell). At 26:38 Edi asks a question about what Donna's doing now:
Donna: Well, David Blair, who has directed almost everything that I've ever written--and we are very close--asked me if I wanted to come to lunch* and I knew it must be serious because David never buys anybody lunch. [laughs] Yeah, so he said, listen, you know, a lot of people had said to him over the years, you know, is there going to be a sequel to Takin' Over the Asylum, and then David said okay, I'll contact David Tennant and Ken Stott and see if they're interested. And within twenty-four hours he said yeah, yeah, Ken and David are both interested, so, you know, now you can work on it.

Edi: So this is an exclusive to this program, then?

Donna: It is an exclusive!

Edi: There will be a Takin' Over the Asylum Part 2?

Donna: If we can find someone who wants it, yes. It will be about what happened to Campbell and Eddie twenty-five years later, and it will be about redemption, and, um, a soul being saved.

I saw some replies to a tumblr post that made me afraid it might become a radio series only if it comes to fruition at all, but David Blair seems to be pretty much a TV director, so there's hope...

Random other bit, Donna quoting Scottish coworkers about herself: "Donna sounds like an American until she says 'Scotland' or 'Glasgow'" - heheh, it's mostly true. There's a few other words where I can hear more Scottish sounds too. Her speech is a curious mix overall.

Fandom interests: I'm a fandom butterfly. I've been in fandom for a long time and have collected too many fandoms to list. My very first fandom was Sailor Moon, and then I briefly passed through Evangelion before eventually ending up stuck on Gundam Wing for years (halp). Later, I found out that things other than anime exist; right now I'm reading a lot of Marvel fanfiction.

I like to talk about the things that I'm reading or watching and I'm looking for friends who have a similar outlook - not necessarily people in the same fandoms. I guess I'm just looking for fannish people. I've always been big on meta; I used to moderate fanficrants and little_details on LJ.

OTPs and ships: I don't really have OTPs, but I hang out on the slash side most of the time.

I'm gonna talk about it in detail here, and a lot of it will be spoilers - please, if you've not played it yet and you intend to, finish it before reading this. It's one of those games that absolutely needs to be gone into with minimal spoilers for you to get the real punch out of it.

I'm gonna put spoilery content warnings under a cut first, though, for people that might have issues because some of the themes are potentially somewhere between upsetting and triggering - I'll write them out as vaguely as I can!
Mildly spoilery content warnings )

Spoiler-filled thoughts )

TL;DR - if you haven't played this game, it's absolutely worth every last penny.
If you have, oh my god, come talk with me about it, I need to talk about it more but I don't want to spoil it for my friends

We bought Linnea a new flute today. We were sick of paying for the low end rental, it's pretty clear she's going to stick with flute, and it was time.

The new instrument sounds SO much better. It's got open holes, currently plugged, so she'll have to learn to play with those, and it is probably a better instrument than she needed, but she'll grow into it from a musical standpoint, I think.

Once she realized that this was going to be her flute, not just a rental? She lit up with joy, and has been smiling and bouncing off the walls and using words like happy and amazing and excited. She's so appreciative when she gets things she really wants, I love getting her stuff.

Ooof, though. Expensive.

But, considering how happy she is, WEP.

I just got a campsite, apparently on a bluff overlooking the ocean, for Linnea's bday weekend. I think it's the last freaking campsite available within 50 miles.

Last year, I snagged the last campsite at Mt Rainier.

I have to start planning a bit earlier, I think.

With a bit of luck, we'll be camping for Linnea's bday. I don't know if Perry and AC will come with us, AC may have school, so it just might be Linnea and us. We'll see. I'm very much looking forward to it.

I'd have loved to go for my birthday, but Linnea is leaving for Scotland and Ireland on my bday, so I expect next weekend to be a bit hectic, so didn't make plans. Plus dh and AC may be driving the backroads of Oregon chasing the SP4449. I'd have loved to go with them, damn it. Last time we did it was so much fun... Linnea potty trained in the back of the Pilot, we saw some spectacular scenery, and really had a wonderful time.

One sentence summary: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D.Vance is basically one long -very long- poorly written, humblebrag.

Just no.

I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, who is, at least, a good reader if a mediocre writer.

Other one sentence summary: Hillbillies are soooper speshul poor people, whose poverty is different from other poverty.

Seriously, though, the generalizations of "hillbilly"/Appalachian culture made me cringe. The hillbilly code of honor made me sick, a glorification of violence (think honor killings, and you're pretty close).

The book is a memoir, nothing more. These is nothing but triviality in the overall picture of the culture, this is not a socio-cultural study with a memoir interwoven, but, as I said above, a long humblebrag of a memoir. The almost breathless "I don't understand how I, a hillbilly from-- could ever have graduated from Yale Law School, but I'm really an outsider, so I'm really better than all those kids who had it easy, even if they are my friends."

And the stereotypical liberal college student who speaks out against the military and the Iraq War in the same class as our patriotic ex-Marine was just fucking yuck. Abu Ghraib happened, and your rosy picture of all the sensitivity the military displayed in Iraq, in the light of that level of torture and abuse? Not convincing.

It was annoying and repetitive. The author's insistence of calling himself, as a twenty-something, a "kid" grated.

It's almost as if... one of my repeated whines is authors writing about romance, adding in a were-creature, and calling it "fantasy". Nope. In the same way, this book is, mostly about a dysfunctional family (J.D. did NOT have the benefit of a decent family life), but he seems to have used a sprinkling of hillbilly speech, and culture to try to turn his story of growing up with a horrible parents into a larger story. And it doesn't work.

I was also bothered by the cultural generalizations. I don't know much about Appalachian culture, and maybe he is spot on, but some of the glorification of of bad behaviour really bothered me. It also bugged me that he clearly blames the problem of the white working class on pretty much everything BUT the white working class. And truly, while they are certainly NOT 100% of blame, he himself recounts stories of their actions that put the blame squarely there.

Just ugh. At least it was a library audiobook and not something I bought.

ETA. A comment from goodreads does a good job of summing it up:

So, take out the "social analysis" and you're left with 200 pages of memoirs from a 31 year-old (lol) ex-marine cishet white male conservative with a Yale law degree. If that's your thing, then you might enjoy the memoirs. It just doesn't jive with what I had in mind to read this year (or ever).

ETA. Also, how many times does he point out, over the course of the book, this his high school had not produced any Ivy League bound students (before him, of course)? Four? More? Nasty little self-centered conservative "I've got mine, I'm better than my people and the advantaged coastal elites" kinda guy.

The more I think about the book, the angrier and more disgusted it makes me. And it really bugs me that the smarmy little shit is making a mint off of it.
I never can resist [community profile] hc_bingo. I mean, between free interpretation, metaphor, choosing hurt-only, hurt/comfort, comfort-only, the multitudinous means of getting a bingo and the fact there are no penalties even if you don't even post one fill in amnesty, and a year-long period of writing altogether, what's to be afraid of?

Well, save the card itself. (I look at everyone else's cards and so many of the prompts and go YES YES YES and then get mine and go: 0_o for a few hours until ideas start arriving. This one is particularly scary, I feel, but has possibilities. And, you know, it's pretty, and it's not as if h/c and apocalypses aren't likely to overlap here and there...)

My hc_bingo card )

Ideas welcome! Also I am ridiculously tempted by writing the 12,500 word 25-in-one special achievement, except I cannot imagine how that would go or how I would pull it off and survive/keep a straight face.

What I've Just finished Reading

Frances Brody's Dying in the Wool, the first of the Kate Shackleton mysteries. I did like this, but the title, cover and first person narration promise a lighter tone than is actually the case - they seem quite serious so far. Kate Shackleton is another ex-VAD detective, and they're set in Yorkshire, which is a nice bonus, and seem pretty well-researched. (In the case of the first one, I'd say maybe too well-researched or too inclined to share it here and there, but it's better than the more common alternative.)

I also finished note-taking from Maureen Waller's The English Marriage, which was very readable, with plenty of examples and quotes from letters, diaries and court cases from the middle ages to the twentieth century, mostly of terrible marriages (but not always).

I think maybe one highlight is the super-sarcastic sentence of a 1845 Judge (Mr Justice Maule) on a labourer convicted of bigamy:Cut for lengthy sarcastic summing up )

And then I also went back through The Rise and Fall of the Victorian Servant by Pamela Horn and now I have notes from it, too. Not magically, but not too painfully either.

I also finished reading Alison Light's Common People, her history of her very 'ordinary' family. It was very interesting. I think the best bit was the Road to Netherne section, following a maternal line (which had a narrower, more distinct focus) but it was very good overall.

What I'm Reading Now

Still not really read much more of HMS Surprise. I tried the other night, but they went on about eating rats, the same day as next door's rats came back, and I was also stressed so I had my Doomwatch-inspired evil rats nightmare and when I woke I knew there actually were rats nearby (even if not irrationally terrifying dream rats; it doesn't help at 4am). I am now eyeing it warily, and instead reading:

A Medal for Murder, the second Kate Shackleton mystery. It is still not light, but it is interesting. (The misleading covers and titles are very misleading! I am not able to shake them off and accept its seriousness yet. I will persevere, because they are otherwise good and it's not Frances Brody's fault if the publishers set about misleading people. Mind, I think I resent the flashbacks. It's a detective story, I'm supposed to have it unravel courtesy of the detective; don't give me flashbacks!)

For note-taking, I have now returned to Jerry White's London in the 19th Century: A Human Awful Wonder of God, which I was forced to abandon six years ago due to illness. I triumph at last! Also, it's very readable and interesting as well as useful. (I have the 20th C and 18th C ones, too, which I am now looking forward to as well, at some point.)

What I'm Reading Next

Who knows? Possibly the collection of Gothic novels I picked up in the free bookshop. Otherwise, I have mostly just started things, so it's a bit early to say.

My friend sent me this link of someone going through all the different shipping combos for Homestuck pairs and I'm weirdly fascinated by it.

It's absolutely hysterical to me that even after all this time, John/Dave is still the most popular ship, even above all the canon ships. And that Dave and Karkat have the highest number of selfcest works.
Some of the pairings with higher numbers surprise me a little, though - Kanaya/Vriska is one I'd never considered!
Also, on the Alpha/Beforean chart it's quite sad to see how little fic there is for it, but it is very understandable - we only really got one small chunk of getting to know the trolls, and it wasn't long. The crossover chart shows there's only 78 fics for Vriska/Meenah, which breaks my heart because I loved them. There IS a comparably significant quantity of Karkat/Kankri, though, which is hilarious.

I do wonder with some of these pairings what quadrant they're being shipped in, though - but even just thinking about trying to compile that data made my brain hurt.

I bought an iRobot Roomba a few weeks back. This was a second try with Roombas, the one I had many years ago was.... ok, but a pain in the butt, didn't really clean all that well, got stuck routinely etc. But I figured that hey, a decade later, and from Costco with their excellent return policy, gotta try again.

So we did.

AC set it up last Saturday, I hadn't had time, and set it roaming the house.

The cat ignored the Roomba. Linnea, however, finds it totally freaking and hates.

We knew we'd have to name it, and tossed around a few ideas. In totally sexist fashion, I was planning on a male name.

I was cooking. And the Roomba came and tried to get around my feet. And failed. And tried again. And failed again. And wandered off a few feet and then... came back, with a vengeance (or so it seemed to me), resolute and intent on getting to the area behind my feet.

And so named herself. Elizabeth. Because she persisted.

Ultimately, the South did have the right idea.

Of course, goes without saying etc, for the wrong reasons, since theirs were based on abhorrent beliefs about slavery and the humanity of, umm, humans.

But where they were right was in what they decided to do.

When it became apparent to them that The Other Side no longer shared (*) their basic beliefs, that the other side no longer held the same tenets as to what the fundamentals of society and civilization should be, they opted for out. They decided to leave a county that no longer held to their ideals (repeating: their ideals were despicable.) (*)If the rest of the country ever agreed with those ideals or just went along to form the United States is something I'm sure those of you who once took US history know, but that I don't. The point holds that the North was no longer willing to stand by and allow the abomination of slavery to continue.

We're at the same crossroads as the South. Half the county, maybe even more, no longer holds the same fundamental beliefs. The other side is so blinded by hate of the non-deserving other that they will vote to deny said other health care, access to food, education (looking at you, Betsy DeVos), the fundamental right to their own bodily autonomy, and freedom from oppression and fear .

By "We" right now, I mean blue states. Yes, there are pockets of resistance in a sea of red (Austin, Ann Arbor, Madison...), but at this point, red states have decided collectively that they loooove hate too much and want to be free to hate pridefully more than they want to see their follow citizens fed, healthy, educated, and able to fully participate in society.

We no longer even share a common belief in fucking science. There isn't much to be gained in discussions with people who think scientists are lying, don't know what they're talking about, and really, to use a favourite Asimov quote of mine, we've gotten to this point: Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'

So maybe it is time to start talking about parting ways. The West Coast, the Northeast, Minnesota and Illinois, maybe as one country, maybe as several, but it's time to start thinking of whether we are better together or apart.

At this point, I would vote in favour of "apart". I don't see the point is trying to persuade states who voted for, and continue to support and approve of Trump and the obstructionist Republicans that our ideas are better and grounded in reality. That they help people, even the people who vote against them.

The states that voted against an agenda that would help everyone are, in general, the taker states, the ones that take more from the same federal government that they are trying to weaken. The blue states give more in taxes than we take back, and in return, we get to be governed by a bunch of incompetent hateful mouth breathers that the "takers" voted it. This is a ridiculous situation, and one that should not continue.

It's time to go, West Coast people. Let Iowa and Mississippi and Wisconsin and Michigan and Louisiana and Florida and the rest of them wallow in their hatred. Take our marbles and see what we can do when we're not being dragged down by states who oppose progress and deny reality.
