shyfoxling: Colin Creevey with camera, text "Fangirl!" (squee (colin fangirl))

Not From Others by [archiveofourown.org profile] floreatcastellum
Pairing/Characters: Deathly Hallows ensemble: Ginny, Neville, Luna, Colin, Parvati, Seamus, McGonagall, Snape, Carrows, etc.; canon ships
Rating: Teen
Words: 132,914

Author's summary: She may not have been able to join Harry, Ron and Hermione, but Ginny refuses to go down without a fight. As war approaches, Ginny returns to Hogwarts to resurrect Dumbledore's Army and face the darkest year the wizarding world has ever seen.
Author's warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death [i.e. the canon deaths]

I am a bad person and didn't leave a single comment on this novel-length fic, even though I read every word (rather than skimming, as I often do). But that in itself is pretty much what I have to say about it. Ginny is the POV character. Canon-compliant and reads pretty canon-like if you're in the mood for a good gen fic that follows the happenings in Ginny's life during the year of endless camping, and what comes after.

Quote:
Unfortunately, as Percy frantically tried to go over and comfort his embarrassed girlfriend, he tripped over the corner of the blanket, crashing into Harry who, in an effort to keep Teddy out of harm’s way, left his entire face exposed to Percy’s flailing arm, which connected with his forehead with a loud smack.

‘Careful, Perce, you’ll give him a scar,’ said George.

Return to Hogwarts by [archiveofourown.org profile] arithmancer
Pairing/Characters: Severus, Argus, Portrait!Albus, Minerva
Rating: G
Words: 2339

Author's summary: Severus Snape returns to Hogwarts as Headmaster. One-shot inspired by the events of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".
Author's warnings: (none)

My comment: "Well done. You've got Severus nailed."

Quote:
“Murderer!” she exclaimed, her voice heavy with disgust.
With a slightly mocking smile and courteous nod of his head, Severus swept his arm to indicate his guest should step inside.
“Minerva!” he said. “Do come in.”

Wormwood and Gall by [livejournal.com profile] delphipsmith (in [livejournal.com profile] snapecase)
Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, cameo by Lucius Malfoy; G, 3785 words
Author's summary: When Severus is offered the job of Potions Master at Hogwarts, he thinks that perhaps life might not be as desolate as it looked. Whether or not this is correct remains to be seen.
Author's warnings: Angst.

My comment: Great "missing years" piece.

Quote:
"Are you well, Severus?" Albus Dumbledore said solicitously.

"Oh yes," Severus Snape said through numb lips. "Being nearly condemned to Azkaban is such an...energizing pastime."

Grey in the Dark by [archiveofourown.org profile] potionpen
Eileen, Severus, OMC; AO3 rated "general audiences", 4082 words
Author's summary: It's a chocolate-scented August in the Sherwood, and there's a stormcrow at the door.

(this is about Severus buying his first wand, but not from Ollivander.)

Quote:
"And he's a Ministry toady," the woman added, scowling. "The Trace on every bleeding wand he sells."

"Southern milquetoast," Dickon agrees, making a face. "No one'd stand for that nonsense north of Kent. Now, lad, do you want your mam to stay?"

(Love is a) Battlefield by [insanejournal.com profile] veridari (in [insanejournal.com profile] severus_sighs)
Severus/Harry, Neville, Teeny Nagini, Minerva, Draco and BAMF!Trevor; G
Author's summary: It is the annual Staff Valentine's Day Party, where lines are drawn in the sand, enemies are made and Cupid is nowhere to be found. Or is he? Yes, just your typical holiday at Hogwarts.

My comment: LOL! I love all of this. I think my favorite part is either Trevor's less-than-impressed look at his costume, or Minerva's assured delight at pointing out the missed point in Severus's logic...

Five Moments of Doubt by [archiveofourown.org profile] Bagheera
Severus, Minerva, Ginny, Neville, Luna, Pomona Sprout; AO3 rated "general audiences", 5911 words
Author's summary: Five times someone doubted Snape's allegiance while he was headmaster, five moments at Hogwarts during year seven.

Quote:
Ginny swallowed. Most portraits were feigning sleep, some empty, but Dumbledore was awake and present. He raised his silver eyebrows at her, then made a shooing motion with his hand, as if to remind her of her lines. Then he leaned back in the window frame and gazed down at Snape, calm and melancholy, as if he were seeing something quite different from his murderer.

The Things Draco Carries by [archiveofourown.org profile] catsintheattic
Draco, Pansy, Severus, Vincent, Gregory, Blaise, Malfoys; AO3 rated "teen and up", 4875 words
Author's summary: Another pure-blood will recognise you by your blood and heritage, but any commoner will recognise you by your possessions. Seven years at Hogwarts. Seven insights into Draco’s schoolbag.

Quote:
There is a Potions essay in his bag that Professor Snape has marked in Draco’s first year. He has written not too bad under the text, followed by the energetic scribble that is his signature. Knowing Snape, Draco treats the parchment as if his Professor’s script were written in ink of gold.

Last Day at the Mill by Squirrel Patronus
Tobias, Severus; rated Teen, 2016 words
Author's summary: The Mill in Cokeworth is shutting down. Tobias Snape and his son, Severus, have different ideas about the future of the city.

Quote:
He had meant to be friendly, conversational. His own son was a stranger to him. Severus smiled a ghastly grin at him. His black eyes continued to bore through his father.

So, y'all* get a load of this? http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/video-j-k-rowling-admits-deathly-hallows-draft-had-snape-vs-harry-not-mcgonagall-86207/

I don’t like the marginalisation of women when the fighting breaks out. We get to fight too. I really wanted that. In fact, there was an earlier draft... I know there was at one point, it was Harry who took on Snape in that confrontation, and I really didn't want that to happen.

In the book Minerva McGonagall was the one who does it, and for me it was very important that she did that.

I agree very much that the women characters ought to fight as well and I think everyone reading this probably enjoyed seeing what a badass Minerva was, but on the other hand I've got to wonder what we'd have got if it had stayed Harry on the other end of that duel. (One hopes it would have been more than a repeat of the end of HBP where Severus hands the kid his arse on a platter!) It's not as simple as just the change in meaning from it being a female instead of a male; it being Harry (as opposed to another male teacher, like Flitwick) would have changed the whole ensuing action considerably.

* I settled on just the pronoun here because I was getting way too caught up on how I might spell the mushed up contraction of "did you all" that I was actually thinking: j'y'all? d'j'y'all? djy'all?

Concept art by James Goodridge for Harry Potter (and a few other things), or see also on Oclumencia

Some of these strike me a little oddly:

"His Use of Power" Action!Hero!Snape - weird, but weirds me out less than "Wisdom and Determination" Hulk!Dumbledore

"Made Low" - what is going on here I don't even? Is this some kind of concept for "Flight of the Prince" or maybe something from the Occlumency stuff in OotP?

Good body language in "Snape Persona" but it's like he took Alan Rickman and somehow made him look even less right.

"Embracing Leadership" (Snape leaning on the Headmaster's owl podium) is pretty cool, though, even despite the Alan-Rickman-lookalike aversion I have these days.

D'you suppose Draco and Pansy were Head Boy and Girl during that seventh year we didn't see much of? Obviously it's not Ron and/or Hermione. And somehow I don't find it likely it would be Ernie Macmillan, Hannah Abbott (whose mother was "found dead"), Anthony Goldstein, or Padma Patil. So unless someone else was selected without having first been prefects a la James Potter (and possibly Lily too)...

(haha, not a good choice there on the still frame for the embed, Youtube.)

It's kind of funny how well these three people are imitating Dan, Rupert, and Emma doing Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Like, their delivery and body language and stuff are recognizable as those actors playing those parts. Kind of meta. *aigidda-aigidda-aigidda*

You know, it's kind of funny how I can bitch and moan about WB and the hash they make of the story and the visual design (although sometimes they get it really right, and sometimes even if strictly non-canon, it's so cool that I don't care - warning: TVTropes link), and yet, somehow they still know how to emotionally manipulate me and make me excited and even eager to go shell out $10 to see this. Twice, even (DH Part 2). Part of me resents that, and part of me is like "Dude, it's just a show, I should really just relax. Count your blessings: don't you complain of anhedonia? If this affects you like that and makes you get that squirmy fuzzy happy fangirly feeling in your stomach, be glad, shut up and enjoy it."

Good glimpse of the Seven Potters in this one; hearing Fleur's voice from DanRad's mouth is very weird (and not how Polyjuice works in canon, nor logical; consistent with how they did it in the CoS film, but also requires us to suppose that Barty Jr was merely doing a very good job of imitating Moody's voice all year!): Read more... )

You can see a bit of Snape in this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wodrP0Dj79E (and it would seem that those who supposed the weird still with arm upraised was at the gates of Malfoy Manor are correct), but even though it's just half a second or something (ca. 0:09), I think I prefer this one: Read more... )

As much as I complain about Rickman!Snape in stills and posters these days, I can't deny that if you let him speak and move (and glare, and billow), he still steals a scene in about ... negative three seconds flat.

There's a new TV spot for DH: http://community.livejournal.com/dhmoviepics/75203.html (rather than embedding it myself. *is lazy*) The scene in Malfoy Manor with Snape's awful hair is considerably improved by being able to hear him speak. No matter how much I might complain about Alan Rickman visually, I still love his vocal delivery. And it seems that the weird-looking still with him with his arm raised and no visible wand really is him doing something with his wand - I was right that he was simply caught in the middle of an action (a kind of slicing upward arc) and it made it look weird.
Dunno if any of you saw these in [livejournal.com profile] lolpotters, or care, so hey, I'll inflict them on you here. *inflict* *inflict*
