Donna, Immobile by [ profile] pedanther
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing/Characters: Donna, Ten
Rating: General
Words: 452

Author's summary: Donna is strapped into some kind of alien thingummy, which is ticking and counting down to something (and not even in proper numbers, so not only does she not know how she's going to die, she doesn't know how long she has left). The Doctor, irritating man, is refusing to admit this is a problem. This story was written and first posted well before the season finale, so any overtones that have retroactively attached themselves to the Doctor's cheerful view of Donna's future are unintentional. (Unless you feel they improve the story, in which case, obviously, I meant to do that.) Anyone who feels inclined to nitpick the Doctor's theory is invited to remember that the real Rule One is "The Doctor talks a lot of nonsense when he's shooting his mouth off".

DW premiere: We're not crying, you're crying. That is all. (Ok, not all: PETERRRR NOOO DON'T LEEEAVVVEEEEEE---!)

Also, since Class wasn't shown on BBC America until now: what is the deal with the "prom"? I thought that was such a uniquely American thing that it featured on lists of "major ridiculous mistakes to avoid if you're an American trying to write in a British fandom, because no one else does this"? I feel like I must be picturing the wrong thing.
There's a couple other odds and ends here, such as a Doctor Who wallpaper, but here's the three ficlets I received:

Quibbles about why companions these days must always be 21st century women (although I suppose that's not confirmed yet) aside, Iiiii may already love Bill in a way I never really did Clara. I dunno. It just feels like in a few seconds of screentime I've already made some kind of emotional connection to her that was hard for me to do with Clara. (I liked Oswin and governess Clara was also good, but as a whole... meh.) IDK. There's just something about her that excites me a bit, where Clara did not...?

Just being silly. I've kind of been wanting to do a whole series of these with as many Doctors as possible, though I'm not sure appropriate source images exist in every case. I just happened to be looking at Tragical History Tour's screencap gallery for "Tooth & Claw" today and it occurred to me the 1280x720 images might almost be large enough to support a small (8 1/2 x 11) printed poster, which was the desired result as I wanted to be able to stick it to the supply cabinet behind my desk next to my printout of this:

Last night, apparently having a passing feeling of pique over how people put Rose Tyler in, like, Every Other Thing David Tennant's Ever Done, I facetiously wondered aloud, "How come it's never Rose from the Golden Girls, huh?" Then it occurred to me to think, fandom being what it is, that oh no, somebody probably had done just that. But the closest I could find on either FFN or AO3 was someone who apparently enjoyed making Leonard McCoy boink every other character they could think of, to judge from the tags, and this included Rose Nylund; so, that's Rose and a doctor, but not the Doctor. Alas.

(Not that I would actually want to read the genuine article, mind. Eep.)

Hm. Apparently I have quite a taste for the Victorious and other ways of depicting Ten losing his shit mentally and/or emotionally. Wonder what that says about me.

(no, DW, when I try to tag this post "the valeyard" you should not autocomplete it with "takin' over the asylum". even if maybe there is a vague thematic link with what I just said about Ten losing his mind.)

In the posts I've been reading, opinions on the changing of the guard in Doctor Who seem to amount to:

"Yay, Chris Chibnall! 42! Law and Order UK! Broadchurch!"
"Ugh, Chris Chibnall. 42. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. Cyberwoman. Just another selection from that old boys' club."
"Should have been Toby Whithouse!"
"I was so worried it was going to be Toby Whithouse!"
"Anyone but Mark Gatiss!"
"...anyone but Mark Gatiss."

Hmm. Seems about par for the fandom...

So I didn't even notice Facebook being down at all (tells you how much I use it), and I'm apparently out of many loops that I didn't hear about this through any other vector until I had got home from work at anbout 8:30 and asked my husband what was up, but I'm amused that apparently there were a couple of factions yesterday:

Most of the internet: Water on Mars! Wooooo!
Doctor Who fans: Water on Mars?! Nooooo!

This. Is just. I mean. There were those videos of Peter playing guitar like this and tumblr is calling him "red velvet cupcake" because of the red velvet coat and I just can't even.

Twelfth Doctor as Mr Clever

I did not know I needed this. Mr Clever always fell kind of flat for me with Matt Smith, but Peter effing Capaldi? Legitimately terrifying to me. YES GOOD WE NEEDS IT PRECIOUS SOMEONE WRITE THE THING

eta 3/4/15: Moffat in DWM #484 said, "Peter magnifies anything that is dark." True, true - I guess why this idea would work so well for me here. Reminds me of something kinda parallel he said about Matt Smith when they were choosing his costume, that if you make him look cool he looks really cool (something they wanted to avoid), so, like he magnifies it.

News has been going around that Doctor Who LEGO will be released later this year. I hope this means there is some possibility of a LEGO Doctor Who game; we have loved the hell out of the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars ones.

'Course, knowing me, I would likely just run around exclusively as the Tenth Doctor like I pretty much never used any character other than Severus Snape unless I had to. (But then, IIRC he was the only character who could both use Dark magic and cast a Patronus - I recall squeeing when I noticed they had paid attention to that - which was handy for solving things without switching as often.)

I love when fandom knowledge applies to work. (There have been a couple of similar incidents in the past when discussing exactly how to attribute authorship of Beedle the Bard.) Had this exchange today on a cataloging list I subscribe to:

Actually, yes, and that is the way the character is currently named in the show credits. Pickier fans will insist it's the most (or only) correct way to name him, though there were times in the show history the character was called "Doctor Who" in the credits, and usage has been inconsistent among media and even cast members. There are some running jokes about it within the show, but in dialogue it's fairly consistent that his name is simply "the Doctor".

See for some general background and if you really want to know details about when the phrase "Doctor Who" comes up as distinct from "the Doctor".

* This means that if you search for "Doctor Who" in the subject file you will be forwarded to "Doctor"; the initial article is dropped. Also, I don't know why he's referring to this as a "(subject) authority", because the field numbers 400 and 100 (instead of 450 and 150) are for personal name entries. (Maybe he's objecting to the conversion of subject authorities for fictional characters into name authorities that's happening with RDA.)

If you are interested in the full glory of the LC subject authority record, which also includes see-from aliases for John Smith and Theta Sigma, lists his "Field of activity" as "Time travel", where I think one might normally expect something more mundane like "Biology", and includes recent citations from the BBC website and TARDIS Wikia, see here.
