Let's Go Round Again by [archiveofourown.org profile] Jaxon ([tumblr.com profile] deathdaydungron)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Severus, Lily (some Severus/Lily), Tobias & Eileen Snape, brief appearance by Ron Weasley
Rating: General
Words: 4242

Author's summary/notes: Severus died at the jaws of Nagini in May 1998, but instead of taking a well earned rest in the afterlife, he finds himself back in Cokeworth...in December 1975. This is tagged as Snily, because it touches on their relationship (and well, you'll see) - but be warned that the prompt explicitly asked for them not to get together... Received a Tumblr prompt asking: Can you please write something where Snape goes back in time after dying, but decides to not pursue Lily (because she deserves better or realizing that he needs to let go of her if he wants to move on)?
Author's warnings: none

My comment: Would be a bit spoilery. Just know that it's got a sort of Groundhog Day or Peggy Sue Got Married setup.

Quote:
“No, Lil-” He placed his hand over one of hers. “I’m sorry. It’s just… Lucius isn’t who I thought he was.”
“You mean he’s not a rich, smug, Muggle hating Death Eater?”
“I’ve been an idiot,” Severus said, twisting his left ear, looking ashamed. “He is a rich, smug, Muggle hating Death Eater. And I don’t want to be that.” He looked up. “Well, I wouldn’t mind being rich…”

Putting this second one behind a cut because it has spoilers for Broadchurch season 3, which hasn't aired in the US yet (begins June 28).

I have allowed my recs bookmarks folder to get way out of control. So beware the recs list of DOOOOOOOOM!

It's possible I have recced some of these before, yet they reappeared in the folder due to syncing mismatches between three installs of Pale Moon (Firefox), but whatever. If they were worth it once, surely they're worth it again. Read more... )

Whew! What was that, 20? I dunno, I only sort of counted the number of times I pasted in my rec template. I have a few Yuletide recs in other fandoms, but I'll save those for a different post.
Circumstances Being What They Are by [archiveofourown.org profile] scratchywilson
Severus, Voldemort, Dumbledore, rated Gen in AO3 system (possibly PG), 3840 words
Author's summary: GoF gapfiller. Severus Snape returns to the fold of the Death Eaters, willingly binding his fate to two masters. He wonders if the return will be worth the risk.
Author's warnings: Non-graphic violence

My comment: "Great job! Good choice of 'missing moment' - this is something so important to Severus's story."

Quote:
He did not dare speak until the Dark Lord gave him permission. But no welcome, no reproach, even no curse came. The silence stretched on, punctuated only by the hiss and crack of the logs in the fire. The Dark Lord was a cat, toying with his meal.

Twenty Things Slytherin Knows About That Rantypants Brewery Swot With The Nose (and one thing Gryffindor never will) by [archiveofourown.org profile] potionpen
Severus, various Slytherins, Lily, basically an ensemble cast; Gen in AO3 (but it does have some coarse language so maybe PG-13 for that), 18902 words
Author's summary: Some people are Slyth enough to sort Gryff, and some are kinda sorta vey is mir zomg unbelievably not. (Does what it says on the label).
No warnings but let me quote the extensive, amusing tag list at you: Hat abuse, we're gonna win the universe!, slices of life, Severus wishes he were a sneaky bastard, I fight only for myself, that hate-on Severus has for Gryffindor, that hate-on Gryffindor has for Severus, bullheaded stubbornness vs. two-faced hypocrisy, young Severus, nongraphic, harsh world, Severus's embarrassing love affair with potions, episodic, abuse of defenseless textbooks.

I left more than one comment on this in conversation with the author (which half the time isn't exactly relevant to the story); you can read those here if you like.

Quote:
One soggy, humid November day in fourth year (and let's be fair, now, the wet chill and low barometer had even normal people surly and touchy) he walked out of a Runes exam, stiffarmed Bagman against the wall, spoke a quiet word to him, and padded away.

Right, right, a nothing, sure, and that's what everyone else thought, too, only once he was gone it took Lupin and Evans and two of Bagman's mates to lever him, quivering, out of his steaming puddle and drag him to the infirmary, where he babbled for hours about endless frozen depths of hell rising up to spear him through the nose with unholy blasting black flames of icy scornful pitchforky death.

P.S. That excerpt (not to mention the title) is pretty representative of the style; it will help your enjoyment of this fic a lot if you like that sort of on-purpose-run-on, ranty, slightly breathless and hysterical tone played for humor (as well as ha ha only serious). There really are a lot of clever phrasings in this fic.

(Finding) Life After Voldemort by [livejournal.com profile] r_grayjoy in [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas
Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, Pomona Sprout, Alastor Moody, Remus Lupin, Lily Potter, Eileen Snape, and (offscreen) Neville Longbottom; PG-13, ~3500 words
Author's summary: A series of not-so-unrelated moments in the lives of several not-so-unconnected individuals. (Largely gen with a side of femslash and a dash of slash thrown in for flavor. AU of the "Deaths? What Deaths?" sort.)

My comment: "Nice series :)" (ooo helpful.)

Quote:
There was a great deal of Eileen Snape in her son. They both had the same long, homely features and pitch-black hair that was prone to oiliness and disarray. They had both mastered the sort of withering glare that made the recipient feel approximately ten centimeters high. And they were both capable of holding a grudge for decades.

Nine recs, a few slightly stale from holiday fests, others from [livejournal.com profile] snapecase which is still posting, although I could have sworn I saw the author of "Standing at the Fork in the Road" claiming it as hers somewhere O.o but I can't find that now. (Anyway, if any of these are yours and you're at liberty to reveal it, please do say - I may have missed some attributions since it seems not all fests go back and edit in author names after reveals.)

On the table here today we have Severus/Regulus, Severus/Sirius, two Severus/Harry, and a bunch of gen (or nearly gen).

( Dec. 6th, 2010 01:15 pm)
Random unfinished fragment that I don't really intend to so anything else with. I briefly considered starting a filter for these kinds of scratchpad/"sketchbook"/"scrapbook" things, because I know there are some people who don't mind looking at such whereas others avoid anything but fully finished works and won't even touch a chaptered WIP until it's done, but I figure it's better to have it public behind a cut and them that ain't int'rested, they's don' have to click.

So. Severus and Lily genish/unrequited (whatever you want to call it - pretty much like it is in canon), off the terribly original idea of a slightly different take at the portrait hole and then follows a few of Severus's thoughts. ~600 words.

Secret Santa by aramintasnape (Severus/Aurora, sexy fluff, R, 2875 words)
Every year, Albus organises a Secret Santa for the staff. This year, Severus decides to liven up the proceedings...

Three words: Black silk lingerie. Hee! Also, this is set in my favourite under-written era for Severus, the young professor (1980s).

Christ, what was wrong with him? Maybe Albus had slipped him a Get-Totally-Over-Excited-and-Act-Like-An-Idiot-At-Christmas potion on the sly. It couldn't be possible that he was actually looking forward to Christmas presents.

-----

There must be something in the water mulled wine this year, because besides [livejournal.com profile] mimimanderly's A Visit from Severus, we also have A Visit from St. Severus by hexgirl (both are a strong PG-13 or soft R, I think):

His black eyes they glinted! His skin was like chalk!
His cheeks were like marble, his nose like a hawk!
The sneer on his lips was enough to rouse fright,
And the hair on his head was as dark as the night.

Sort of oldish, from this summer's Snarry Games:
Connecting the Dotty by [livejournal.com profile] igtow (Severus/Harry, romance/family, PG-13, ~19200 words)
A gentle tale of growing old together.

[livejournal.com profile] igtow's summary pretty much says it. Harry and Severus begin this story aged in the middle of their second centuries, and it's about them and their considerable number of descendents and family dealing with Severus's growing senility -- and, as the story goes on, some of Harry's problems as well. This grabbed me in the gut early on and didn't let go. I'm having a really hard time picking a good excerpt out of this because it doesn't seem to want to be carved into little chunks like that. So... next!

A Severus Christmas Carol by Strega Arvay (gen/supernatural, PG, ~26900)
What the Dickens? Severus Snape finds himself at the end of the year, feeling particularly foul. Leave it to the 'ghosts' of Christmas Past, Present and Future to set him straight. AU story with DH spoilers! Takes place in Harry's 5th year... sorta.

Probably a cliched idea by now, but I thought this was a good take on it that had its own life and didn't feel limp or stale. Regulus stands in for Marley, and the three spirits are Lily, Dumbledore, and (naturally, given the appearance) a Dementor. It has the predictable ending as it's a clear example of based-on-X homage, but again, I was taken with the way the HP characters were adapted into the known storyline and made relevant there with their own twist.

Snape stood transfixed by the scene in front of him. He wanted to believe with all his might that the heat in his face came solely from the setting sun shining in through the kitchen window. Without looking at Dumbledore, he asked, “Tell me, does [Harry] live or die?”

“That I cannot say, Severus,” Dumbledore sighed. “I only know what lies… well, technically, what lay ahead of me in my life. But I do see an empty chair at the Gryffindor table, and a wand without an owner. If things remain as they are then, yes, I do believe Harry will die.” His voice changed, harsher and cutting. “But he should consider himself lucky, right? Lucky to be so blissfully removed from the torment of this world?”

The echo of his own words cut through Snape like a knife [...]

So sweet. I love Severus's glasses and apparent age and the contented familiarity in him ruffling Harry's hair.

There are some other photos of this interesting Snape cosplay as well. Normally I would say that nose prosthesis takes it over the top into slightly cruel caricature, but somehow it really brings this particular costume together.

The Long Road

I loved the moody colour and how a frightened child grows into a sullen teenager, a disaffected adult, and then a total mystery with his back turned to the viewer. Very simply drawn but quite effective.

This made me LOL IRL. Just look at Severus and Minerva's poses and expressions, and Albus's drink with the umbrella! Poor woman, being headmistress and sharing an office with those two...

Since I've already gone and violated taboos today, here's something else that contravenes several of what I have deduced to be the commandments of fanfic:

1. Thou shalt have thy work betaed (at least if it's over a certain length).
2. Thou shalt have thy work Britpicked (where applicable).
3. Thou shalt not post WIPs unless thou dost not mind losing a lot of thy possible readership (the many who refuse to read WIPs until they're completed).

I just want to seem like I'm doing something, yeah?

Title: Lost Causes
Characters/Pairings: this part Lily/James talked about, Sirius/Remus hinted at, Severus, Regulus
Rating: this part PG
Words: this part ~3100
Summary: Second chances are all well and good, but sometimes things really are lost. Maybe. Depending on your definition of "lost".
Warnings: As said above, unbetaed, unBritpicked, and WIP. Future parts will contain both slash and het, strong language, and drug use.

things i'm gonna do (G)
A seriously gorgeous drawing of Regulus with the locket. I mean like wow.

Snack (PG for silly kissyface)
*sporfle* Yeah. Snack: it's kinda like that.

Severus HBP (G)
Apparently mostly lighting practice, but I like the moody atmosphere and young Severus's (he looks maybe 12-13 to me) morose expression.

The First Wand (G)
G for Good God That's So Cute, that is. Little Lily and Severus getting their wands.

Snape, memories (G)
Just a simple sketch, but I love his melancholy expression, and the shape of his nose is oddly beautiful.

At the Top of the Hill (G)
Severus kneeling on that dark windy hilltop, offering Dumbledore "anything". All the fine lines give this the look of an engraving. His cloak and hair being whipped about in the wind are wonderful.

Boys Night In (NC-17 and very NWS)
Severus/Sirius/James: it tastes better when it's consensual (at least that seems to be the intent). acatnamedeaster has a gift for pleasured facial expressions, I think. I dare you to look at Severus's face and his hand grabbing the sheet and not drool. (Also: Sirius, lol get a hairstylist.)
