DW premiere: We're not crying, you're crying. That is all. (Ok, not all: PETERRRR NOOO DON'T LEEEAVVVEEEEEE---!)

Also, since Class wasn't shown on BBC America until now: what is the deal with the "prom"? I thought that was such a uniquely American thing that it featured on lists of "major ridiculous mistakes to avoid if you're an American trying to write in a British fandom, because no one else does this"? I feel like I must be picturing the wrong thing.

Some of this post is pastede on yey from chat log with husband, plus bonus font markup.

For some reason I have got the idea in my head that writing an interactive fiction (aka text adventure) not-quite-perfect-play game transcript as a form of fanfic would be amusing to anyone other than myself (and possibly [livejournal.com profile] bethos, who I beta-tested a Potterverse IF game for a few years ago). I've been chuckling over random lines here and there for the past two hours.

Let's never mind what a long hard slog it would be to write even a transcript, never mind a game. I tried IF authoring once, with Adventure Game Toolkit, which is, um, looked on with some horror and is very much Not Inform and Not TADS. I digress, I'm sure, from the understanding of most people reading this. So anyway, all that is only explanation (well...) for this:

this is taking over my brain

Have you tried...

...ASK SNAPE ABOUT DUNDERHEADS?
...taking Polyjuice while someone else is present?
...INSULTing various characters, such as your professors, Severus, James, Sirius, Hagrid, Peeves...?
...INSULTing James or Sirius while Severus is present?
...INSULTing Lily while Severus is present? (You may wish to SAVE your state first.)

(I'm amused, but not really surprised, that I had an extant tag for "sarcasm" and didn't have to create it to apply it to this post.)

In her book The Writing Life (1989), Annie Dillard tells the story of a fellow writer who was asked by a student, "Do you think I could be a writer?" "'Well,' the writer said, 'do you like sentences?'" The student is surprised by the question, but Dillard knows exactly what was meant. He was being told, she explains, that "if he liked sentences he could begin," and she remembers a similar conversation with a painter friend. "I asked him how he came to be a painter. He said, 'I like the smell of paint.'"

I think that after completely choking on my Wankfest fic that I need a palate cleanser. (Stop that sniggering, you in the back.) Anyone want to try to drabble prompt me? No guarantees (partly because of my brain, and partly because of squirrelly internet access), but... well, I feel like I should at least pretend to try. (sort of as in, [livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu, as I was saying last night chatting with [personal profile] r_grayjoy & co.)

This line has to go because it doesn't fit with the different tone I am trying to take in this fic I am frantically revising, but I thought y'all might enjoy it as an "extra":

...undoing the various fastenings of his clothing in a threatening sort of way. (This was a rather tricky thing to achieve, but Severus Snape had a lot of practice turning everyday actions into threats.)

So it looks like I may have a Wankfest fic after all. I'm not quite finished but should be soon. Would anyone be available to do a beta? Anon fest so I don't want to give too many clues, but it's pretty vanilla porniness, per the rules it's less than 5000 words, and if you know the sort of thing I tend to write, you can probably guess who might be in it. Ability to Britpick also helpful but this fic is pretty silly in nature so I'm really only worried about the most glaring of problems in that arena.

Saw this meme via [personal profile] elf.

Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous.

anti valentines

kiriban mybreathingselfagain (extremely, extremely overdue - I learned from this never to offer kiribans on dA, since I can't write to a schedule)

Lost Causes (actually in three pieces plus an outline, two of which I posted a long time ago, but whatever)

mad sev of bedlam ("WIP", ha. this is barely a plot bunny)

Old Black Rum (a Snack long in progress)

regulus visits severus (might be tackable on to Lost Causes)

untitled (patio) (that hideous monster, a transparent self-insert bearing the author's actual name, or more accurately, a "HP character comes to this reality" scenario)

Would you consider gaining of sexual favors by use of a straightforward aphrodisiac/lust potion/love potion, used specifically by one person on another for this purpose (rather than by accident), to be dub-con or non-con?

Me, I'd consider this dub-con. The subject is conscious and otherwise in possession of all his faculties; he might do things he otherwise wouldn't have done, but they aren't being directly or violently forced. You might call it coercion, I guess.

Anyway, I don't want to under-warn so I thought I'd ask y'all's opinions?

Come on, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, reveal already so I can point out the inexplicable nearly 9000 caution-to-the-winds words (unbetaed, unbritpicked etc) I wrote between four different fics/ficlets. (Didn't get to one of the five I wanted to tackle, but 80% is a B-minus, at least...)

*wibbles confusedly* How is it I have 2700 narrative + 650 outline of vaguely-Sev/Lily-as-it's-afterlife-something (yeah, really original, I know, but... well, it's what's there)? I feel like I'm tramping through the muck of territory that has been traversed many times since July 2007, and that makes this a priori worthless, but... well, even if not, there's no way what I can have to say on the topic will be any better than anyone else's, than the fics that got me into this years ago. I even usually pass over fics which address this in my own feeds as "boring, BTDT"; how can I expect anyone else to give a damn about it now?

So it might surprise you to know that I actually do have some WIPs which are kinda, sorta, albeit slowly, really being worked on.

1. A kiriban (a foolish idea; never again, since I can't write on demand) for mybreathingselfagain on deviantArt; I decided to go with her prompt of "a depressing Lily/Snape story (can also be after Lily's death, maybe about him discovering that she had not been so "perfect" after all, that she'd had her flaws too?)" There's no narrative actually written yet, but I do have about 400 words of summary/synopsis written, something about a spell which sends a letter to a dead person.

2. "The Old Black Rum", a Severus/Sirius vaguely hurt/comforty thing loosely inspired by the Great Big Sea song of the same title. I've got about 4000 words of narrative and a further 570 of summary/synopsis for the rest (plus it's missing a beginning section which would probably be another 300-400 words or so).

Other things which I really do intend to get back to, but which have been very dormant:

3. "Lost Causes", which eventually wants to be a Severus/Lily/Regulus. I've actually posted two chapters of that already (Chapter 1, Chapter 2)--another thing I've learned never to do, post WIPs, since it seems to annoy so many people and there's no way I can keep up on anything with regularity--and I have an additional ~2000 words of synopsis of the remainder of the narrative. Also it can possibly lead into a sort sort of Sev/Reg (maybe pre-slash) fragment of ~1700 words I have about Regulus figuring out the deal with the locket Horcrux and asking Severus's help in the matter.

4. I even have a secret author self-insert thing (as those few who have seen it will know) which was up to ~7600 words, but the first chapter of that was written a year and a half ago and at this point I'm not holding out a lot of hope for it. I find it very difficult to write about myself in such an absurd situation.

Is someone available to beta and/or Britpick (both needed; any one person could do only either) ~4000 words of Severus gen-ish? It's about experimenting with Sectumsempra, minor bits of Lucius popping in, some hints of (maybe) unrequited Severus -> Lily.

I was reading the entry for OotP Ch 31 at http://hpcompanion.com just now, and I noticed this pull quote under an illustration:

No fewer than four Stunners had shot from the figures around the cabin toward Professor McGonagall. Halfway between cabin and castle the red beams collided with her. For a moment she looked luminous, illuminated by an eerie red glow, then was lifted right off her feet, landed hard on her back, and moved no more. (emphasis mine)

That phrase sound familiar? Yeah. So I decided to search out how many times this sort of language is used in the text. And except for this example and the other one in DH... it isn't. Only Minerva and Severus sustain an injury and then "move no more". McGonagall, of course, we know to have survived her incident with the Stunners.

Well, well.

(I don't think this parallel phrasing was an intentional hint, esp. since JKR claims not to reread her own work, but it's sure something to add to the pile of fiddly, meaning-stretched details if one wishes to cuddle a "Snape survived" theory. ;) )

I'd really like to try to write a present for our dear Professor's birthday (not connected to whe "write short bits" part of [community profile] severusbigbang), but I just have no clue where to start. I don't particularly wish to write something birthday-themed, just a gift, you know? I thought of trying to finish one of the couple things I have on the go (at a very low simmer), but ugh. Anyone want to try prompting me?

Very intriguing post by [personal profile] baxil on "Muse", "the muse" (and a shaper-of-ideas he calls "Doot", short for "deuteragonist"), the creative/writing process, NaNo, and his adventures in an ongoing shared setting he writes in.

I submitted some fic prompts to [livejournal.com profile] hp_art_tales. I dunno if anyone will take me up on any of them, but it's worth a shot. I'm toying with the idea of maybe trying to write for someone since they're allowing a really long time (over four months), but if so, maybe I won't do it by officially signing up to write. Not like someone would turn down a fic for their art just because it wasn't in an official venue, right? I dunno, though, of the other 89 comments (not sure how many are art, but artists can submit up to 10, so there were numerous options) nothing has yet turned my crank, possibly because there's somewhat of a dearth of Severus Snape (of course, my standards on what would constitute sufficient Snape are certainly unusually high, and possibly downright absurd ;) ).
