shyfoxling: Sirius Black looking serious (sirius (lookin' sirius))

Great meta post by [ profile] pazithigallifreya responding to the question of just what Sirius was thinking in trying to get Severus to meet a werewolf in the Shrieking Shack, wandering into Sirius's psychology in general and his relationship with Severus:

...yeah, pretty much.

(I wanted to tag this "quivering collection of the worst and least helpful emotions"*, but I don't think I can make a tag that long.)

* Actually a quote from Fraggle Rock!

Holiday cards were pitched in the mailbox this morning. Unfortunately I think that means the ones destined for further lands (relative to California) may arrive a little behind schedule. Ah well.

In other news, via [ profile] bewarethesmirk: challenging the concept of a Mary Sue as problematic in a feminist context. (briefly: why is it ok for men and boys to have idealized, wish-fulfillment, power-fantasy characters, but not women and girls?)

What they say on the tin. Click at your own risk. If you hadn't wanted to join [community profile] ontd_hogwarts and click through a bunch of links with smaller tidbits, you'll be able to find much of it collected on either/both of these. Particularly, the first one has all the Minerva McGonagall stuff put together, as well as a couple "Jo's thoughts" (NB this is my term for the out-of-universe stuff on how she created names, etc.; I dunno what it's actually designated as on the site) things I hadn't seen yet, about "Privet Drive" and "ghost plots".

The controversy began last week when Etsy flipped the switch on People Search as part of its effort to make Etsy feel more like a social network. Now, when users run a search for a person's full name, that user's account will show up in the search results, even if that person is only a buyer. ... The problem is that, aside from a thread in Etsy's forums (which is almost entirely used by sellers, not buyers), Etsy has not notified users of the change in privacy settings or policy. Previously, users could search Etsy for seller names, but the names of buyers were not exposed as part of the search. Not only are buyers searchable now, they're even searchable by real name if that info is in their account profiles—this is not a required element of the registration process, but there's nothing to indicate that it's optional. ... Even better, people's Etsy profiles and their purchase histories (via the feedback they leave) are beginning to show up under Google results for their names. ... Those who do have accounts on Etsy can remove their real names from their profile pages, and there's also a way to make your purchase history private (Your Account > Settings > Privacy). However, most account holders aren't even aware of the change in the first place, and they're not likely to change their settings without some sort of prompt.

1. Is it weird that I got a much bigger immediate pang of excitement about these books for the Deathly Hallows film (warning: big images) than I have gotten from any of the epilogue filming shots (with way-too-old looking Harry and Draco, especially) that have been going around?

2. From Daily Snitch: Actors and Movies: Chris Rankin completes Deathly Hallows filming -- hee. For some bizarre reason Percy is still my favourite Weasley. They had better leave in that "Minister, did I mention I'm resigning?" line in the second film.

3. EA Deathly Hallows part 1 game trailer -- I hope this isn't as disappointing as the HBP game was. The OotP game was good enough I've played through it twice. I've had no urge to do the same with the HBP game, largely because it was a repeating sequence of a few minigames only thinly stitched together with plot, and very "railroaded" despite the fact that you can go wherever you want in Hogwarts most of the time. (And the mechanic for Potions class, while cool at first and definitely more detailed than the one in OotP, wore thin rather quickly.) It looks like they're, uh, taking some liberties with the canon storyline, but that's not only to be expected anyway, but I'd have a hard time fathoming how they'd turn the camping saga into an action video game. It does look pretty cool, although I dunno what they're going for with the Voldie-head-in-the-clouds bit at the end of the trailer. I guess it's supposed to be menacing, but I'm kinda seeing the "God" projection from Star Trek V...
